Partner Recruitment Is Easy. Partner Activation Is the Real Work.
The gap between a signed partner and a selling partner is where most channel programmes lose momentum.
Channel plans often start with recruitment targets because they are easy to count. The problem is that partner logos do not create revenue. A partner becomes strategically valuable when it understands the proposition, can identify the right opportunity, knows how to progress it and sees enough commercial value to repeat the behaviour.
Activation is therefore an operating discipline. It combines segmentation, onboarding, enablement, joint planning, demand support, incentives and feedback.
Segment partners by potential and role
Not every partner should receive the same programme. Some bring geographic reach, some customer relationships, some technical capability and some a specific route to market. Define the job each partner type is expected to do before deciding benefits and support.
This also improves resource allocation. High-potential partners may justify joint planning and campaigns, while broader long-tail partners need scalable digital enablement and self-service.
Compress time to first value
Long onboarding programmes create drop-off. Instead, identify the minimum a partner needs to become competent enough to find and progress the first opportunity. That usually includes target customer profile, discovery questions, proposition, demo or proof path, pricing and escalation.
The first win is powerful because it turns abstract programme value into lived experience. Build an activation plan specifically around achieving it.
Make joint marketing commercially specific
Generic co-branded campaigns rarely create strong partner behaviour. Joint activity should be built around a defined customer problem, a named audience, an offer and a next step that the partner can follow up.
That does not require expensive campaigns. A focused account list, webinar, workshop, assessment or customer review can be more effective when sales and marketing agree how opportunities will be handled.
Create a partner health model
A practical health model looks at readiness, activity and outcomes. Training completion alone is not enough. Combine it with pipeline, quoting, campaigns, customer meetings, revenue and qualitative feedback.
Use the model to decide where to invest, where to intervene and where to stop spending time. Channel teams need permission to prioritise productive relationships.
Practical checklist
- Give every partner segment a defined role.
- Set a target for time to first opportunity.
- Build a first-win playbook.
- Connect joint marketing to sales follow-up.
- Review partner health quarterly and reallocate support.
